The NYCC Tennis Program offers a wide range of competitive play opportunities for families as well as social opportunities.

Our team of tennis professionals work creatively to provide a variety of tournaments, classes, lessons and childrens’ programs that contribute to a lively challenging, and fun environment for players of all ages and experience levels.

Events and Activities

Each year the Tennis Committee supports many fun activities, socials, events and tournaments for players of all levels. For adults the season begins with a Tennis Kickoff Social in the spring, an evening featuring doubles and mixed doubles play with hors d’oeuvres and beverages served court side. Next up is the Member-Member Tournament to start the summer with some friendly competition. Then comes the signature event on the NYCC tennis calendar, the Member-Guest Tournament, a weekend celebration of great tennis, food, and friends. Interspersed throughout the tennis season are several other Mixed Doubles Socials, a Singles Championship and a Parent/Child Tournament.

Tournament and Teams

Team play is an essential part of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club’s tennis experience whether for Adult or Junior players. We compete in USTA team tennis leagues each season and play matches against local area club players.

Adult men’s and women’s teams compete in the Anderson Cup, Spindle Cup, Virginia Cup, Tidewater Cup and Senior Tidewater Cup competitions against top clubs from around the state. The Club also offers Ladies Lunch League Teams which compete and socialize over lunch with other area clubs each fall and spring season.

Junior Tennis

We offer Junior classes for all ages year round that emphasize fun and fundamentals. Clinics are held after school and during the summer months.

There are fun Tennis & Pizza Nights every month starting in April, Junior Mentor Days that pair high school age players with and against adult players monthly, and match play days organized every other weekend. The Parent/Child Tournament, the Junior Club Championship at summers end, and the Fall Junior Tournament add three more competitive opportunities for juniors.

NYCC Junior players field a team each year which competes in the Junior Country Club Cup against teams from The Country Club of Virginia, Farmington Country Club, and Princess Anne Country Club. In addition, we compete in USTA team tennis leagues each season and play matches against local area club players.

Coaching

The professional tennis staff offer a variety of instructional opportunities. There are private lessons of varying length, including video lessons and Get Fit Cardio Workout lessons in addition to basic instructional lessons and strategy sessions. Group instruction includes fast paced cardio tennis clinics, doubles strategy clinics or skill development clinics that focus on technique.

Pickleball

Pickleball is fun, social and friendly! The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game.

Squash

For the Squash enthusiast, NYCC offers 2 international courts and programs for both adults and juniors looking to develop their game. With over 20 million players nationwide, Squash is a rapidly expanding sport that continues to draw elite athletes from all over the world. The two squash courts located in the downstairs level of the Fitness Center meet the international standards and regulations. Squash lessons from our Squash Pro, and reservations for courts are available to meet your needs and advance your game.

Platform Tennis

Platform Tennis is an outdoor racquet sport generally played in cool or cold weather, although it has become a year-round sport in some regions.
